Get Ready for Amonkhet Prerelease and Start Winning!! — April 23, 2017

Get Ready for Amonkhet Prerelease and Start Winning!!

Hi Magic Gamers,

It’s time of the year for Magic: The Gathering Prerelease event.

Amonkhet, Set 1 of 2 in the plane of Amonkhet, prerelease is on April 22nd and 23rd , 2017.    Enjoy your prerelease!

Here is a simple guide for you all who plan to attend AKH Prerelease:

This is Amonkhet prerelease pack:

amonkhet_prerleease.png

which contains 6 Amonkhet boosters, a randomized date-stamped premium promo card, a spin down life counter, and others.

Format: minimum 40-card sealed deck, constructed from the 6 boosters in the prerelease pack.

Amonkhet New Mechanics:

EMBALM:  When a creature card with embalm is in your graveyard, you can activate its embalm ability, by paying the embalm cost and exile the card. You do this any time you could cast a sorcery, meaning during your main phase when nothing else is happening. When the ability resolves, you create a token copy of the card.

EXERT:  There are Creatures with exert ability in which you can decide whether to exert a creature when you declare it as an attacker.  If you choose to have it exert, an ability will trigger and grant you some bonus. As a trade-off, the creature won’t untap during your next turn.

AFTERMATH: The return of split cards!  Basically, they are two cards in one.  One half can be casted normally, and the other half can only be casted when the card is in the graveyard.   Once that half resolves, the card is exiled.

Cycling: Card with cycling abilities let you discard a card with a mana cost to draw a card.

-1/-1 COUNTERS:  There are cards that put -1/-1 counter on creatures.

Enjoy Your Amonkhet Prerelease and Good luck!

Format: minimum 40-card sealed deck, constructed from the 6 boosters in the prerelease pack.

Aether Revolt New Mechanics:

Revolt: is a new ability word that appears in front of abilities that depend on a permanent you control leaving the battlefield.  For example, Airdrop Aeronauts has revolt ability.  Thus, if you sacrifice an artifact before you cast this card, you would gain 5 life.

en_5Uo1tkwlqf.png

Improvise:  You can use your artifacts to help cast the cards with improvise ability word, but, still need to pay for the colored mana portion of a mana cost of the cards.  For example, the cheapest mana cost of Herald of Anguish is BB, as the 5 generic mana can be paid by tapping the artifacts on your field.

Vehicles & Energy mechanics are still there.  🙂

Get Ready for Kaladesh Prerelease! — September 20, 2016

Get Ready for Kaladesh Prerelease!

Hi Magic Gamers,

Kaladesh (KLD) prerelease is on Sept 24th & 25th.  Enjoy your prerelease!

Here is a simple guide for you all who plan to attend KLD Prerelease:

This is Kaladesh prerelease pack:

kld_prerelease

which contains 6 Kaladesh boosters, a premium foil date-stamped promo card, and a spin down life counter.  It also come with constructable thopter (Really?!?!).  A premium foil thopter token, would be better!

Format: minimum 40-card sealed deck, constructed from the 6 boosters in the prerelease pack.

Kaladesh New Mechanics:

  1. Vehicles:  is a new artifact card, and has a crew ability that turns it into an artifact creature.  In order to activate its crew ability, you need to tap number of creatures you control with total power equal to or greater than the crew number.  This includes the one that just entered the battlefield, or tap an animated vehicle to crew another Vehicle.  For example,en_xhHIG0S1uab.png
  2. Energy:  is represented by energy counters, a new kind of counter that players can get through certain cards, and it can be spent for something.  For example, the following card requires 3 energy counters to create a 1/1 colorless Thopter.en_5gERgs8jcW.png
  3. Fabricate:  Certain creatures enter the battlefield, with an option of either put a number of +1/+1 counters on the creature, or create a number of 1/1 colorless Servo artifact creature tokens.  The number after fabricate tells you how many +1/+1 counters or Servos you get.  Please note that your opponent has a choice to response, thus, if the creature with Fabricate isn’t on the battlefield after the stack is resolved, you must choose to create the Servo tokens.   For example, en_hFCRUhZ72eb.png

Lastly, there is a re-branded Mechanic called Create which is basically “Put x y/y colorless Thopter artifact creature token with flying onto the battlefield”.   For example, en_ThNbgc6cmC.png

Some notable uncommon and common I would consider of putting into my 40-card seal deck.

Get Ready for Eldritch Moon Prerelease! — June 30, 2016

Get Ready for Eldritch Moon Prerelease!

Hi Magic Gamers,

Eldritch Moon (EMN) prerelease is on July 16th & 17th.  Enjoy your prerelease!

Here is a simple guide for you all who plan to attend EMN Prerelease

dLsz5pWAdOThe prerelease pack contains 4 Eldritch Moon boosters, 2 Shadows over Innistrad boosters and a Premium foil date-stamped promo car, and a spin down dice.

EMN prerelease pack also contains a premium foil, double-faced Zombie token, which is different from previous prerelease packs.

Format: minimum 40-card sealed deck, constructed from the 6 boosters in the prerelease pack.

EMN New Mechanics:

  1. Meld:  Two cards melding together into one big monster. For example,  when Bruna, and Gisela are on the field, you can meld them by exiling them to form Brisela.  Brisela is one permanent, just like any other permanent.  However, the difference will be, if Brisela leaves the battlefield, both Bruna and Gisela leave together.

  2. Emerge:  Spell with Emerge can be cast by paying its mana cost.  However, if you can sacrifice a monster, the mana cost of spell with Emerge will be reduced in amount by the mana cost of the sacrificed monster.  Do note that the colored mana of the Emerge cost can not be reduced.   For example, Elder Deep-Fiend, its Emerge cost is 5UU, you still need to pay UU if you sacrifice a monster with 7 mana cost.  Using emerge doesn’t change when you can cast the spell.Elder-Deep-Fiend
  3. Escalate:  Instant or sorcery card that offers different modes, for example, Blessed Alliance.   If you choose to pay just the mana cost, you can choose one of the modes. If a spell is cast with mana cost and escalate cost,  you can choose multiple modes. Do note that  the effects will happen in the order printed on the card.   The target for each mode can be different if the mode requires one.Blessed-Alliance-Eldritch-Moon-Spoiler

Some notable uncommon and common I would put into my 40-card seal deck.

Get Ready for Shadows Over Innistrad (SOI) Prerelease!

EN_SOI_EventRotator_Release_InlineL

Hi Magic Fans,

Shadows Over Innistrad (SOI) prerelease is on April 2nd & 3rd.  Enjoy your prerelease!

Here is a simple guide for you all who plan to attend SOI Prerelease

EN_SOIPrereleaseKit_DropDown_Content_Image

The pre-release kit comes with 6 SOI Boosters, 1 foiled date-stamped promo card from rare or mythic rare, and a spindown life dice.

Format: minimum 40-card sealed deck, constructed from the 6 SOI boosters for the prerelease kit.

Mechanics:

  1. Double-faced cards (DFC):  It has two card faces and no back.  DFC is like the planeswalker cards in Magic Origins with different rules.  Briefly, the front face of DFCs (and some back faces) each have an ability of transforms that permanent if the condition is met.   When a DFC transforms, it turns over to its other face.  For example,

2. Delirium: a ability word that highlights cards that get better if you have four or more card types represented in your graveyard.  For example,

en_0q7UNnq0Lk

3. Investigate:  a new key word which allows you to put a clue token onto the battlefield. A Clue is a new colorless artifact type, and have the ability “{2}, Sacrifice this artifact: Draw a card.”.   For example,

en_KrPxKkSTGp

4. Madness:  If you discard a card with madness, you exile it instead of putting it into your graveyard.  This causes an ability to trigger.  When that ability resolves, you can cast the spell for its madness cost.  Typically, madness cost is lower.

AsylumVisitor

5. Skulk:  Creature with skulk can’t be blocked by any creature with greater power.   For example,

These are the notable common & uncommon cards that I think are good in limited seal deck.

ˈalī/
  1. a state formally cooperating with another for a military or other purpose, typically by treaty.

By definition above, the strategy of this deck is to cast ally creatures every turn if possible, and with their mutual beneficial ally ability, the opponent will be crushed.  Thus, Ally creatures with 1 or 2 mana drops are selected.  The mutual beneficial ability is centered around player’s life gain effect that causes opponent to reduce life.

The color of this deck is centered around WHITE & BLACK.

Zada Onslaught Deck for Standard MTG — October 22, 2015

Zada Onslaught Deck for Standard MTG

Zada Onslaught!

Color: RED,GREEN,WHITE

Strategy:
1) Generate many goblin tokens through dragon fodder & hordeling outburst
2) Use Zada’s effect to copy instant or sorcery to all tokens on field

Get Ready for Magic Origins Pre-release!

nissa kytheon lilian jace chandra

I dropped by my LGS last night (3rd July 2015) to pick 3 packs of MM2015, and I was informed that Magic Origins pre-release is on next Friday!  Registration fee is about $25 USD, and it comes with a pre-release kit.   The pre-release kit contains a particular color seed booster and 6 magic origins booster packs.   The image of planewalker of that color will be printed in the pre-release kit. Being a budget MTG collector, I decided to purchase two release kits.  Which color should I choose?  One is definitely my favourite color after MM2015 i.e. Green.  The other color is still up in the air.  Then, I thought maybe I could decide based on their financial value.  Thus, I did a break down of all the mythic and rares for each color.

The price listed is based on the average price in tcgplayer as of 5th July 2015.

BLUE is surprisingly low in value.  Do let me know if I miss any valuable mythic or rares.  RED has second highest value, after GREEN.  However, the BLACK planewalker, Liliana, is more attractive to me. 🙂  Thus, I chose BLACK as my second color in the pre-release. I hope this will help you on choosing your color for magic Origins pre-release.  Enjoy the game! Thanks!
